Sun Tzu (translated by Thomas Cleary). The Art of War. Boston: Shambhala, 1988.
Date: 2 January 2003
I dare not write too much about such a highly revered work. Sun Tzu seems to be a required reference for military commanders who aspire to be strategists. Indeed, some of Sun Tzu's quotes are powerful and timeless, such as that those most skilled in war subdue their enemy's army without battle. However, many of the statements seem pretty simple and obvious, such as that it is good the get to the battlefield first and secure the high ground.
Aside from the truly inspire remarks, I was impressed that so many convincing statements on coercion were compiled over two millennia ago. Cleary's introduction provides valuable background and commentary to understand and appreciate Sun Tzu's work.
